The Toledo Clinic – St. Luke’s Medicare Partnership Results in Ohio’s Top Performing ACO

The Northwest Ohio Accountable Care Organization (NWO-ACO), a partnership between The Toledo Clinic, St. Luke’s WellCare, and independent community physicians, was recognized for the third straight year for excellence in quality and medical care value.  The 2018 results reflected this partnership to be the best performing healthcare entity based   in the State of Ohio.

“What made 2018 special for our organization was that we had both the highest cost savings per Medicare patient, as well as the highest quality scores for all entities that made shared-savings with Medicare.  It was a home run in our, and our patient’s, eyes”, stated Moshir Jacob, MD, the Chief Medical Officer of NW Ohio ACO.  Medicare is assessing dozens of healthcare organizations across the US on their ability to meet the goals, or “triple aim” of healthcare.  This effort includes improving patient experiences, for example better access, managing illness more effectively, and helping lower costs.

“We’re extremely proud to be the only ACO in the region to achieve this status, and now…three years in a row!” stated Henry Naddaf, MD, President of The Toledo Clinic.  “The criteria for what Medicare is asking us to do, and rewarding us for managing Medicare patients, can easily be applied to other commercial payers or employers.”

Dan Wakeman, President & CEO of St. Luke’s Hospital was very pleased with this year’s   results. “We are thrilled to hear that we continue to raise the bar on improving value to our patients.  St. Luke’s is thrilled to be one of the more successful hospital partners of the ACO, and that is reflected year after year in this patient care program.”
