The Toledo Clinic Introduces Robotic-Assisted Surgery to Outpatient Setting

For years, Northwest Ohio patients have been enjoying the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery.

The only drawback was that robotic procedures were only available in hospitals.

The Toledo Clinic recently changed that equation when they became the first outpatient facility in the state of Ohio to offer the latest cutting-edge technology of the da Vinci X® Robotic Surgery System.  This addition will improve access and lower costs to area patients.

“Robotic-assisted surgery at an outpatient surgery center is a game changer for this region,” said Henry Naddaf, M.D., President of The Toledo Clinic.  “Robotics are used for many different procedures in the hospital, some of which are outpatient.  The Toledo Clinic now provides quality robotic surgeries in a more convenient and suitable outpatient setting.”

Robotic-assisted surgery is also known as “minimally invasive surgery” because smaller incisions are required, and surgeons operate with greater precision.  The outcome is less trauma to the body, resulting in:

  • Less blood loss
  • Less pain
  • Fewer complications, including less risk of infection
  • Faster recovery times

With The Toledo Clinic’s addition of the da Vinci X to its outpatient surgery center, patients will be able to receive all of those benefits at a lower cost—reducing out-of-pocket expenditures.

“The Toledo Clinic outpatient facility is paving a new landscape in how quality healthcare will be routinely accessed by the consumer 10 years from now,” said William Sternfeld, M.D., Executive Director of The Toledo Clinic Outpatient Surgery Center.  “Quality, access and value are The Toledo Clinic’s core principals and by adding the da Vinci to our facility, we have expanded on those pillars.”

National studies have shown that outpatient surgery centers can perform procedures at a 45% to 60% lower cost, compared to hospital-based procedures.

“The da Vinci system is just the latest example of The Toledo Clinic’s commitment to providing high quality and affordable healthcare to the Toledo community,” Dr. Naddaf said.  “When you also consider the quality scores from our ACO partnership with St. Luke’s and our recognized leadership on Patient Centered Medical Home and Oncology Medical Homes, you can see the results we are getting with physician-led medical care.”

The Toledo Clinic is a multi-specialty group practice, consisting of over 270 independent physicians and associated healthcare professionals, practicing in 40 medical and surgical specialties, at more than 60 locations, across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.
